Which vivian was better
She works as a university professor, and is fiercely protective of her students, particularly when they begin to stray. She even temporarily serves as a substitute teacher specializing in Black history at Will and Carlton's private school, and quickly becomes a favorite of the entire student body. Though it's Janet Hubert's Aunt Vivian who is pregnant with little Nicky during the third season, Daphne Maxwell Reid's Aunt Vivian is the one who gets to raise him in the series' final three seasons - both in his infant form, and in his rapidly aged toddler form.
While many of Aunt Vivian's moments with little Nicky take place in the background or blink and miss them scenes, the bond between mother and son proves an adorable addition to the series' later years. When it comes to depictions of Black love in modern sitcom history, it'd be difficult to find a more loving, more fiery, and more natural couple than the pairing of Uncle Phil and Janet Hubert's Aunt Vivian.
The chemistry between these two never wavers, and the show never shies away from exploring their steamier sides, as much as it was able to. No matter what, these two always came across as deeply in love with and attracted to one another. As already discussed above, Daphne Maxwell Reid's Aunt Vivian takes a much more non-confrontational approach to her marriage.
But she also approaches parenting in a much more laid back way, too. With none of the first Aunt Vivian's fierce protective fire and flare, the second Aunt Vivian is much more laid back when it comes to parenting and punishing, leaving most of that responsibility to Uncle Phil.
By contrast, the first Aunt Vivian is by far one of the best protective mother characters in sitcom history. She doesn't shy away from confronting her children, and her nephew, when they are in the wrong. She calls them out for their failings, pushes them to do better, punishes them in tough but fair ways, and always, without fail, supports them whenever they need her to. When I left the show, I had this new baby and no one.
Family disowned me, Hollywood disowned me. My family said, 'You've ruined our name. And they said it was you who banished me. Because you were Will It was hard. I was so driven by fear and jokes and comedy and all of that Words can kill almost everything -- reputation, everything. Everything," Hubert said. It's the kiss of death.
And it's hard enough being a dark-skinned Black woman in this business, but I felt it was necessary for us to finally move forward and I'm sorry that I have blasted you to pieces. I didn't know that when I look back now, it's obvious you were having a hard time and We've said such hateful things about each other publicly and I'm sorry," Hubert apologized, with Smith saying "I'm sorry" as well. Later in the special, Hubert met Reid for the first time on the reimagined set and reunited with the rest of her former co-stars for the first time since her departure.
Hubert and Reid hugged, which brought it all to "a full-circle moment," Alfonso Ribeiro said. A post shared by Will Smith willsmith. Even though Smith and Hubert's conversation left them on good terms, it still didn't feel real for the year-old actress. I don't know if it's real. Even Will Smith seems to prefer one over the other.
But as he went on, his focus shifted more to Hubert. I think that Janet Hubert Whitten brought a really powerful dignity to the show. She sings, she dances.
So I loved what she brought to The Fresh Prince.
