What do gouramis use their feelers for

Will this fin grow back on its own or is there something I should do? He seems fine, he ate and he is currently picking around at the rocks. I feel bad for the little guy:scry:.

You mean those Feeling Whiskers? S I found description for those Fins: Yes a Gourami uses those feelers to help sense out his environment and feel distance like a cat uses his whiskers they often come from Blackwater rivers which are stained brown from dead leaves and peat - the feelers help him see- they also use them to spare with each other like a sword fight but no damage is done.

Occaisionally one will 'hit' the other with it's feelers, is this an aggressive thing, a friendly thing, a pecking order thing or something else? I've never seen them doing it to other fish, only to each other. Thanks Dave. Cheese Specialist Newbie. My golden gourami touches other fish with her feelers. Dunno what they're for, I'd be interested to know. Oh, and kissing gouramis don't have them. My girlfriend an idiot! Cavafish Fishaholic. My pearl gouramis seem to use them to keep the other fish at bay when there is food around.

When I put my fingers up to the glass my Three-spot Gouramis come over and "feel" the glass where my fingers are. John's Newfoundland Canada. I believe they use them for the equivalent of our smell and taste. Fawke Fishaholic. Down a dark hole In the wild, sparkling gouramis feed on small insects, but in the tank, they'll gladly eat dry and live foods with flake foods forming a good base diet. Although dwarf gouramis exhibit the reputable feistiness of the family more than honeys, you should be able to keep up to 3 individuals in a gallon aquarium, even with a school 8 to 10 neons.

You can keep three Dwarf Gouramis in a gallon tank, or just one with a school of other peaceful fish, such as five Neon Tetras. Keeping Dwarf Gouramis Together Dwarf gouramis can be kept together if the proper ratio of males to females is maintained. Keep at least a couple of females for every male. For a 55 I would only recommend 2 male Dwarfs. IF you have access to females, though they look silver or grey, not red or blue you could have have 8, but still only 2 of those as males.

I have 4 honey's in my 29, 2 males and 2 females. Both males are showing breeding colors and building bubble nests and there is zero aggression. Honey gouramis do better in groups and you won't see natural behaviour out of them unless you have a group of at minimum. Honey Gouramis are super shy.

When I got just one for my daughter's tank, I would almost never see it. Adding a couple more to the tank seemed to increase his confidence to display a little more. Not sure what kind of set up you have, but if there are tons of hiding places, expect him to use them a lot.

Being a small, peaceful fish, it's important to remember not to keep Honey Gouramis with too many larger, more aggressive fish. Can gouramis grow their feelers back? Asked by: Sigurd Lehner. You can kind of see that one of the plants is bent over because of the water flow in the top left. Should I look into getting an airstone or something like that? I would do an air stone on both sides of tank or get a few power heads to do even better I would have a few real plants going if you have the lighting?

So more oxygen in the tank will help out? My tank is only 29 gallons, but I'll need two airstones? As for having live plants, I'm not for sure I'm ready to try those out yet. Yes more oxygen would work in anytank but don't forget they are air breathers much like Bettas. How ever I do not see signs of fin rot on either of them.

Their fins are colored correctly and are not black and shreaded looking on the ends. My snails feelers sometimes bend at the ends in odd angles. Then they will grow shorter and then be back to normal in a few days. I belive they eat off the ends. Though snails and gourmais are different things. I would keep my eyes on them.

It will help with tank cycling. As for the feeler problem, I would try garlic guard soaking for their food. It should help. Other then that I don't know what medications to suggest because I don't own gourmais and don't know a ton about them. But I wish you the best of luck with them and hope they heal well! Ok, thank you for all your help and information!
